2009 Ford F-150 Intermittent P2096 Code in Cold Weather Only
I own a 2009 Ford F-150 with an intermittent P2096 code (along with P2098 and P2099) that appears only during cold weather starts. The issue occurs specifically when temperatures drop below -20°C, though it's not consistent—only appearing on startup in extremely cold conditions (such as -30°C during winter). I've cleared the codes immediately after each occurrence, and they do not return until the next cold start. This behavior has been observed twice in previous winters and now reappears this season under similar conditions. The vehicle is stock, with a 5.4L engine, and only 60,000 km on the engine (warranty-covered), though the total mileage is 176,000 km. No other diagnostic codes appear during normal operation. A local dealership has recommended replacing the catalytic converters, but I've also consulted a former Ford dealer employee with 20 years of experience—he's unable to identify the root cause and suggests that catalytic converter replacement may not be necessary. Could this code be related to fuel pressure or sensor performance in cold conditions? Has anyone else experienced this on their 2009 F-150?
1) What engine configuration does your vehicle have? 2) Is the truck stock (no modifications)? Are there any other diagnostic codes present? If available, do you have a live data scanner showing real-time sensor readings? This issue may be related to temperature-sensitive components—consider checking the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and fuel pressure. A pressure drop or sensor drift in cold weather could trigger P2096/P2098/P2099. Clarifying these details would help narrow down potential causes.
