P0171 Fuel Lean Code on 2008 Pontiac Vibe - Diagnosis and Fixes

Model: 2008 Pontiac Vibe Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2013-01-09 19:44

Hello, I'm not very experienced with cars, but I'm reaching out for help. I have a 2008 Pontiac Vibe with 80000 km. The Check Engine Light (CEL) came on, and after taking it to a mechanic, they diagnosed a lean condition with code P0171. They replaced the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and intake gasket, following a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for this issue. After driving the car for one day, the CEL returned. What other steps should I take to resolve this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check for vacuum leaks, especially in the PCV system. Also verify fuel pressure is within the manufacturer's specifications.

It's important to return to the shop that performed the work and discuss the recurring issue. Everyone makes mistakes, and how they handle follow-up problems reflects their customer service quality. P0171 indicates a lean fuel mixture — a common issue with multiple potential causes. Always consider vacuum leaks, fuel pressure, exhaust system leaks, and engine mechanical condition when troubleshooting.

I went back to the mechanic and ran the diagnostic again. The code returned as MAF sensor-related. They suspected the original part was defective and replaced it with a new one. So far, the issue has not returned. Thank you to everyone who provided helpful input.
