P0480 Diagnostic and Cooling Fan Issue in 2008 Lincoln MKZ

Model: 2008 Lincoln MKZ Fault Code: P0480 Posted: 2016-08-20 08:19

My 2008 Lincoln MKZ is not engaging its cooling fan, despite checking fuses and relays — all appear to be functioning properly. The check engine light is on with fault code P0480 (Cooling Fan Circuit Malfunction). I'm seeking guidance on how to diagnose and resolve this issue step by step.

Are the cooling fans spinning freely when manually turned? Check underhood fuse box #F28 — ensure a 60 or 80-amp fuse is intact. Verify that the fan motor connector is securely connected with no visible wire damage. The fan module has three wires: GRN/RED (12V), WHT/BLU (control signal), and BLK/YEL (ground). Please confirm: YES or NO?

Yes, the wiring configuration described is correct.

I suspect your fans are not binding and spin freely. With the connector unplugged, perform a KOEO (Key On, Engine Off) test: Is there 12V present on the GRN/RED wire? Confirm that the BLK/YEL wire provides a solid ground connection.

Do you have the 'Towing Package' installed? This may affect wiring configuration and connector types.

All details provided are accurate and consistent with the vehicle setup.

What is our next step in diagnosing this issue?

Fans spin freely, there is 12V at the fan module, and ground is confirmed. The third wire (PCM control) is critical — with the module plugged in and under KOEO conditions, if 12V is present on this wire, either the module is faulty or the wiring has an open circuit. How many electrical connectors are on the fan module? For non-towing models: 2 connectors (one 3-wire, one 2-wire). Towing package adds a third connector with one 3-wire and two 2-wire connections. You previously confirmed wire colors — is that accurate? SWAG: Fan module is likely defective.

I have searched the entire vehicle and cannot locate a fan control module in my 2008 Lincoln MKZ. If one exists, please advise where to find it.

The fan assembly includes a harness that runs along the top of the radiator and fan unit on the passenger side. I will inspect this connection tomorrow.

Try searching online: "Lincoln MKZ cooling fan module" to find images and diagrams of the actual component location and wiring layout.

I performed that search. I purchased a replacement module from an auto parts store, but a Ford Lincoln dealer technician found nothing during inspection. Last night, while inspecting under the engine, I discovered the CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) located beneath the center intake manifold. After disconnecting its wires, the cooling fans activated. I will update with results.

My initial questions included wire colors, connector types, and your response was 'YES.' However, how did you test for voltage at the fan module? Did you actually perform a KOEO check on the GRN/RED or control wires? In post #4, I asked about the towing package — you replied 'EVERYTHING IS CORRECT.' What exactly did you verify? Do you have one or two cooling fans? Did you conduct the Google image search I suggested? Note: Ford may not list a standalone fan module — it might not be available separately.

The check engine light activated. I took it to AutoZone, which advised replacing the cooling fan relay. After replacement, the warning light remains on and the radiator fan still does not operate unless hardwired. This prevents me from passing smog inspection.
