2007 PT Cruiser OBD Codes P0700, P0750, P0463: Transmission Stuck in 2nd Gear & Fuel Gauge Malfunction

Model: 2007 PT Cruiser Fault Code: P0463 Posted: 2007-06-14 16:03

I own a 2007 PT Cruiser with a 2.4L inline-4 engine and automatic transmission that is currently in 'limp mode.' The vehicle will only stay in second gear when driving, and the fuel gauge intermittently shows empty or full. I've pulled the OBD codes: P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0750 (Transmission Modulator Circuit Fault), and P0463 (Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction). Given these diagnostic trouble codes, could these issues be resolved? Are any of the transmission-related components—such as speed sensors, shift solenoids, or the TCM—likely at fault?

No remaining warranty coverage — this may limit repair options and costs.

My dad works at a car dealership, and he purchased this vehicle at an auto auction with only 16,000 miles on the odometer. This might suggest it's still under original warranty terms, though that depends on specific policy details.

Even if the car is under warranty, it's critical to have the transmission DTCs diagnosed by a professional before further damage occurs. A faulty speed sensor or wiring issue in the TCM relay or control module could cause the transmission to remain stuck in second gear — which can lead to severe internal damage over time. These are common and often repairable issues.

We bought the vehicle with front-end collision damage, so our assumption is that one of the electrical components related to the transmission—such as the shift solenoid pack or speed sensors—is compromised. A wiring harness cut could also be a contributing factor.

If there was front-end damage, it's likely that either the solenoid pack in the transmission or the speed sensors are damaged, or the wiring harness has been severed. This type of issue is typically not covered under warranty. However, since the vehicle still starts, the TCM itself may be intact — which is a positive sign. Good luck and please share your progress once you've diagnosed it!

That makes sense — if the transmission is in limp mode (only allowing second gear and reverse), the TCM might still be functional. Now, how can I access wiring diagrams and diagnostic flow charts online? Are they available for free, or do I need to pay for them?

AllData is a reliable resource, but it requires a subscription. The alternative is visiting your local library — many offer access to full sets of factory motor manuals, which include detailed wiring diagrams and troubleshooting flow charts.

For a 2007 PT Cruiser, given the complexity of the transmission issues and the age of the vehicle, it may be best to schedule an appointment with an authorized dealer for professional diagnosis and repair.
