2007 Mustang GT O2 Sensor Faults P0133 and P0153 - Diagnosing Slow Response in Bank 1 and Bank 2 Sensors

Model: 2007 Mustang GT Fault Code: P0133 Posted: 2014-08-30 19:14

Hi, I own a 2007 Mustang GT with a 4.6L V8 engine, equipped with Kooks headers, an H-pipe, a C&L CAI, and a custom tune from Brooksspeed. I use the Diablo Predator tuner to diagnose and clear fault codes when the 'Check Engine' light comes on. Since installing the headers about four years ago, I've had to reset the system 3–4 times, and this frequency appears to be increasing. I'm currently seeing two O2 sensor-related trouble codes: P0133 (Circuit Slow Response - Bank 1 Sensor 1) and P0153 (Circuit Slow Response - Bank 2 Sensor 1). Given that these are both related to slow response in the front oxygen sensors, I'm wondering if replacing the O2 sensors is necessary. If replacement is required, which specific sensors should I order? Are there any known compatibility issues with aftermarket headers or tuning systems? Thanks for your help!

Your issue is likely related to the components you've installed — especially the Kooks headers and H-pipe. The O2 sensors are key indicators, so it's important to check their actual readings. Use an OBD2 scanner to verify that the oxygen sensors respond appropriately during forced lean or rich conditions — do they show a proper voltage change? If not, this could indicate sensor failure or interference from the exhaust system modifications. Also, consider checking for upstream vs downstream positioning and ensure your tuning software is properly calibrated with the new headers.
