2007 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L Automatic Transmission P0720 Output Speed Sensor Fault - Part Number & Fix Guide

Model: 2007 Jetta 2.5 AT Fault Code: P0720 Posted: 2017-07-10 16:31

Hello, I own a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L Wolfsburg Edition with an automatic transmission, and I'm currently experiencing Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0720. The car occasionally slams into gear when shifting from park to drive or reverse. The check engine light remains illuminated, along with all the gear indicator lights on the dashboard. Despite these issues, the vehicle otherwise drives smoothly under normal conditions. A technician suggested that the output speed sensor might be faulty. I have attached two photos showing the sensor I removed from my transmission — it appears to be located at the bottom of the transmission housing. Could anyone confirm whether this is indeed the correct component? If so, what is the proper part number for a 2007 Jetta 2.5L output speed sensor? Should I consider replacing something else? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi ChillyChills, I have a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta MK5 2.5L with the same P0720 issue and am trying to find the correct part number. I searched online (including eBay) for an output speed sensor, but the one I found appears slightly different from what you've shown in your photos. I’ve attached a photo of the sensor I’m considering — image quality is limited as it's a close-up shot. You can check it out here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Transmission-Output-Speed-Sensor-2005-2010-.../334275896688 Any confirmation on whether this matches your sensor would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ChillyChills, I had the same P0720 issue and took my car to Alpha Transmissions in Illinois. They diagnosed that there were two wiring cables inside the transmission that were overheating and making intermittent contact. No disassembly was needed — they simply isolated both cables, reset the system, and I’ve been driving for over 100 miles with no recurrence of the problem. The output speed sensor I purchased was unused and brand new. For others in Illinois: Alpha Transmissions (847-279-3679) — they also speak Spanish if needed.
