2007 Ford Sport Trac P0342 OBD-II Code: Camshaft Position Sensor Issue and DIY Repair Guide

Model: 2007 Ford Sport Trac Fault Code: P0342 Posted: 2017-10-16 19:19

I have a 2007 Ford Sport Trac with the check engine light on due to OBD-II code P0342. I already replaced the camshaft position sensor, but the issue persists. I need an inspection sticker for this month and am looking for reliable solutions or advice from experienced users. Can anyone provide insight into what might be causing this code or suggest next steps?

The Ford service department diagnosed my vehicle with code P0340 and recommended replacing the camshaft sensor connector and checking the wiring from the sensor to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I'd like to attempt this myself. I have a wiring diagram, but I'm confused about which connector corresponds to PCM pin 45—there are three connectors on the PCM, and I don't know which one to use. Can someone clarify how to identify the correct connector or provide guidance for this specific wire?

My truck makes a loud noise when accelerating past 60 mph, especially during gear shifts—it feels like it's struggling to maintain speed. The engine isn't overheating, but the sound is noticeable and concerning. I bought this truck a month ago and initially had no issues. Since then, I've replaced spark plugs and coils for misfire on cylinders 3 and 7, which previously triggered codes. These new P0342-related issues started after over 250 miles of driving.
