2007 Ford F150 P0022 Code: Diagnosis and Fixes After Replacing Timing Chain, Guides, and VVT Solenoid

Model: 2007 F150 Fault Code: P0022 Posted: 2016-11-06 22:56

I'm experiencing a persistent P0022 fault code on my 2007 Ford F150. I understand what the code indicates — related to Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system issues. I've already replaced the timing chain, guides, phasers, and VVT solenoid. The engine was flushed, and I installed new oil and a fresh filter using 10-30 Castrol. Despite these steps, the P0022 code remains active. I double-checked the timing and confirmed it's properly aligned. However, during operation, after driving several miles and removing the valve cover, I noticed significant slack in the left-side chain at the bottom — specifically on the tensioner side — while the right-side chain appears tight both top and bottom. This asymmetry is concerning. The oil pressure gauge shows normal readings; there's no rattling or unusual noise from the oil pump. I'm unsure whether this could point to a faulty tensioner, worn guides, or an issue with the VVT system itself. Given that all components were replaced, I'm wondering if there might be a deeper underlying problem or if the oil specification is contributing to the failure.

My truck came in with a cam sensor fault in bank 2. After inspection, I found broken guides and damaged timing chain and phasers. Once those were replaced, the P0022 code started appearing — which matches my experience. This suggests that even after replacing major components, VVT system issues can persist or reappear.

I'm facing the same issue on my 2007 F150. I've replaced the timing chain, guides, phasers, VVT solenoids, oil pump, water pump, spark plugs, coils, purge valve, and fuel pump drive module — but now I'm running out of money and still see the P0022 code. I'm completely at a loss and would appreciate any advice or troubleshooting tips from others with similar experiences.

Did you know that using the wrong oil can cause serious problems in modern VVT engines? For your 2007 F150, 10-30 weight oil is not recommended. The correct specification should be a 'water-like' 5W-20 viscosity. Incorrect oil weight or dirty oil can negatively affect phasers, sensors, and tensioners — potentially leading to damage over time. This might explain why the P0022 code persists even after component replacements.
