2007 Ford F150 P0022 Code: Diagnosis and Fixes After Replacing Timing Chain, Guides, and VVT Solenoid
I'm experiencing a persistent P0022 fault code on my 2007 Ford F150. I understand what the code indicates — related to Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system issues. I've already replaced the timing chain, guides, phasers, and VVT solenoid. The engine was flushed, and I installed new oil and a fresh filter using 10-30 Castrol. Despite these steps, the P0022 code remains active. I double-checked the timing and confirmed it's properly aligned. However, during operation, after driving several miles and removing the valve cover, I noticed significant slack in the left-side chain at the bottom — specifically on the tensioner side — while the right-side chain appears tight both top and bottom. This asymmetry is concerning. The oil pressure gauge shows normal readings; there's no rattling or unusual noise from the oil pump. I'm unsure whether this could point to a faulty tensioner, worn guides, or an issue with the VVT system itself. Given that all components were replaced, I'm wondering if there might be a deeper underlying problem or if the oil specification is contributing to the failure.
My truck came in with a cam sensor fault in bank 2. After inspection, I found broken guides and damaged timing chain and phasers. Once those were replaced, the P0022 code started appearing — which matches my experience. This suggests that even after replacing major components, VVT system issues can persist or reappear.
