P0441 OBD2 Code and Fuel Intake Cleaning: Causes and Fixes for 2006 Toyota Corolla

Model: 2006 Toyota Corolla Fault Code: P0441 Posted: 2010-08-16 09:47

Hi everyone, I own a 2006 Toyota Corolla S. Last week, the Check Engine Light came on, so I took it to the dealership. They diagnosed an ECM failure and replaced it under warranty. As part of their recommendation, they suggested fuel intake cleaning—specifically targeting the throttle body and exhaust system—to remove carbon deposits. Since I had never had this service before, I agreed. Three days later, the Check Engine Light returned, and this time the diagnostic code was P044-1, indicating a problem with the evaporative emission control system. The technician advised replacing the charcoal canister, which would cost $500. I’m not very technical, so I’m wondering if the fuel intake cleaning service could have contributed to or triggered this issue. The dealership says it’s unrelated, but I’m skeptical—especially since the problem appeared after the cleaning. This repair is no longer covered under warranty. Could there be another cause besides a faulty charcoal canister? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Unless a vacuum line was disconnected, it's highly unlikely that fuel intake cleaning caused the P0441 fault. The issue may have existed before the ECM failure. Depending on how the ECM failed, the evaporative system might not have been able to run its self-monitoring cycle or log a fault properly. Fuel system cleaning does not typically affect charcoal canister performance. A common cause of charcoal canister failure in Toyota vehicles is overfilling the fuel tank, which allows dirt, mud, and debris to clog internal valves.
