2006 Jetta P2279 Code: Air Intake Leak Diagnosis and MAF Sensor Fix

I've been troubleshooting a P2279 code on my 2006 Jetta, which indicates an air intake leak. I sprayed the entire intake system with carb cleaner to locate any leaks, but didn't notice a significant change in idle behavior. The vehicle still exhibits surging between low and high idle. Additionally, the check engine light has shown P2279, a misfire on cylinder #3, and an O2 sensor reading lean conditions. Today, I temporarily disconnected the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to test the issue. After driving the car for several miles with the MAF unplugged, the surging behavior disappeared entirely. While I now know the MAF sensor must be reconnected, I'm wondering whether this was actually the root cause of my problem. Is the P2279 code primarily due to a faulty or improperly connected MAF sensor? Should I replace the entire MAF unit, or is simply reconnecting it sufficient? Any insights from owners of 2006 Jetta models with similar symptoms would be greatly appreciated.
