2006 Honda Civic EX 1.8L P0171 Code: CAI or MAF Issue After Extended Driving?

Model: 2006 Honda Civic EX Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2007-11-16 14:38

I own a 2006 Honda Civic EX with a 1.8L engine, automatic transmission, and a Cold Air Intake (CAI). The car intermittently displays the P017-1 diagnostic code, which only appears after prolonged driving, followed by shutdown and restart. The dealer initially suggested replacing the CAI filter, which I did. However, they now claim the issue is with the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) and state that due to the CAI system, the MAF repair is not covered under warranty. Given this, are there any other potential causes or viable solutions besides returning to a dealership?

A 2006 Honda Civic should still be within standard warranty coverage. If the issue is related to parts installed after warranty, it's important to verify whether the CAI modification falls under the original equipment manufacturer’s warranty terms or if it voids coverage for subsequent components like MAF.

CAI stands for Cold Air Intake. If the dealer says the MAF is not covered due to the CAI, it's likely because aftermarket modifications can affect sensor performance or void warranty protections. However, unless there was a documented power add-on or modification that directly damaged the MAF, such a claim seems questionable. It’s worth checking if the original factory MAF was properly calibrated and whether the P0171 code is actually caused by airflow inconsistencies rather than a failing sensor.
