2006 Fiesta ST P0172 Error After Fuel and Engine Modifications - Causes and Diagnostics
Hi everyone, I recently modified my 2006 Fiesta ST with de-catted intake, a new manifold and branch system, and upgraded to Cosworth-style 200BHP cams — slightly longer duration with a custom fuel map via UnichipQ+. Despite these upgrades, I'm consistently encountering the P0172 diagnostic trouble code (DTC), indicating a lean condition in the fuel mixture. I've already tried two bottles of injector cleaner, replaced my inline fuel pump, and verified that my oxygen sensors are functioning properly. However, the engine light remains on frequently — even after clearing the code — and it returns within 30km or at idle if I let the car sit for a while. About six months ago, I used octane boosters and AVGAZ (105 octane) in my vehicle before any modifications. Since then, the engine light has been on more often, especially after installing these performance parts. I'm looking for clear explanations: First, why is this P0172 code appearing now? And second, what other potential causes should I check myself — such as fuel delivery, injector performance, or map settings? Any insights from experienced users would be greatly appreciated. I’m really frustrated and don’t want to keep driving with this issue unresolved.
You may not fully understand how the modifications affect fuel delivery — especially with a custom map, which could be causing an overly rich air-fuel mixture leading to P0172.
