2006 F150 5.4L 3L3E P0020, P0022 along with missfire

Model: 2006 F150 Fault Code: P0020 Posted: 2014-10-15 04:22

Ok so I am about done with this damn truck.......Rebuilt motor bored 075, brand new heads, cams, phasers, cam sensor, crank sensor, and vct's...fired up no problem with a rough idle and a missfire on #3 cylinder.. Replaced the over looked broken coil on #3 and smoothed out like a new motor should run. During the break in drive, it seemed like it was lacking power and like it wanted to die when stopping, and if you gave it gas it would straighten right up and go back to running smooth again (still like it was lacking a little power). Check engine light came on and was giving me p0020, p0022, I checked the wire from the vct to the pcm and it checked out fine. Then later after maybe 40 miles or so it started running really rough and said missfire on #5 (P0305), missfire occured durring first 1000 rev. (P0316) and random missfire detected (P0300). I changed the coil on #5 and it made no difference. So my question is, whats the possibility of a new phaser going bad or the timing jumping a tooth on bank 2? And would it throw those codes if so?

2006 f-250 5.4l with P0010, P0020, P0022 codes. I have installed new vct Control solenoid on both sides. Disconnected the battery to reset the PCM. But still come up with the same codes? Help any one. Thanks, Gilbert

It will be a step by step basics first... oil pressure is GOOD - no recent work, no other codes, Next - KOEO is there 12v at the solenoids?

Anonymous 2017-01-01 23:40

there is 12v at the solenoids? I read that why the solenoid stays open? Could this be the PCM? Should I try to replace the PCM and where is a good place to buy? (new or used?) Oil pressure is good. I did change the lower oxygen sensors. I was getting about 10 mpg and was told it could be the oxygen sensors. About a week later the engine light turned on.

code is for CIRCUIT B1 and B2 as well as a position issue. Circuit check first. confirm the signal wire from VCT solenoid to ECM is not grounded, open, shorted to voltage. Check connector - tight corrosion free no damage in first @3inches of wire is often location of failure... Can you use a DVOM, test light wiring diagrams? This vehicle is STOCK no proms, chips etc?

No sign of corrosion at the plugs, I clean them with CRC Electronic Cleaner and no bent wires. I used a light tester and have power on both wires at idle. I will cut the tape on the wire harness and check for shorts. Where can I find a wiring diagram? Stock. yes I can use a voltage tester.

I do have a K & N Filter (Performance intake kit) I intalled with no issues

You have power 12v on both wires at both sensors? I will look for that diagram....will ck in later

PCM terminals 67 solenoid #1, 68 solenoid #2 . Sorry I can not add attachments or diagrams...

I checked bank #1 vct solenoid back to the pcm and found both wires on plug at solenoid show power to ground wire at the pcm plug with ignition on and engine not running. Checked oil pressure and it was good. replaced both vct solenoid with OEM. Some how the solenoids have constant power keeping the solenoid open. Could this be the PCM or Phasers, timing chain or all? If its the phasers, I will replace the timing chain and oil pump. Should I spent the money and buy OEM parts?

the solenoids always have 12v on one wire* the other that goes to PCM. the PCM grounds the wire when it commands the solenoid to open. The PCM has a problem with the voltage on the signal wire solenoid to PCM. either it does not see 12v or does not see drop when wire is grounded. Lets ohm the solenoids to see if in spec. Aftermarket could be problematic. *red/yellow

I have reset the PCM and took the truck to Pep Boys and they only have one code that come up twice, P0022. I have checked for noise on the front cover of the timing chain and I have a little noise on the #2 side and the Phaser is a little noiser on this side aswell. Could the Phaser be causing this code? I am thinking of ordering OEM parts and replacing the timing chain and Phasers. also the oil pump aswell. Parts on Amazon are about $820 + and on ebay about $650 + any suggestions?

Before that overhaul of cam chain etc, you should utilize a scanner to diagnose.. There is TSB 12-7-10 where ford suggests replacing solenoids with 'improved' units* - are those aftermarket items up to spec IDK... lets try this add 1 bottle of RISOLONE a oil detergent operate @ week if continues replace solenoids, if no improvement you should scan and observe cam position and phaser position. * 8L3Z-6M280-B

I used ford OEM solenoids both changed. I have just changed the oil to 10w30 and will add a bottle of RISOLONE and wait a week. thanks, Gilbert

took the front cover off and found both chain guides broken. I have ordered two new Melling cast iron tensioner and a melling oil pump, to install.

Now I have a P0340 code. I looked on line and found it was a camshaft senor. youtube showed me how to check it by putting a power ligt tester to both side on and off with the key on. After that the truck will not start. It was running before the test. The tack is not showing and rpms so now I will be checking the crankshaft senor and possible the PCM to replace them. How do I test the PCM and where shoud I purchase. Should I puchase an OEM?

I am having a problem with my 2004 f150 with code P0022.All components have been replaced(heads, oil pump, chains, phasers, guides, solenoids) but I still have the same problem. Can unplug #2 bank solenoid and the runs smooth but has low power. Can anyone help me?

marvinj start a new topic more techs will see it, add details - recent work WHY all those parts, any modifications and ALL codes. posting.php?mode=post&f=18

Just finished putting head gaskets, complet timing from ford, new coils, new camshafts, new VCT's, new throttle body (electronic), new plugs, and most of the sensors like camshaft sensors and crankshaft sensor !! And I still have this code P0020 cam positioning sensor 1 (bank 2) !! And I don't know what that means !!
