2006 Ford F150 5.4L Engine Sounds Like Diesel with P0340, P0345, and P0012 OBD2 Codes
I own a 2006 Ford F-150 with a 5.4L V8 engine that runs with a diesel-like sound during operation. After running an OBD2 scan, I received persistent fault codes: P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction), P0345 (Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Malfunction), and P0012 (Variable Valve Timing - Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Control). Both camshaft position sensors were replaced, but the engine still exhibits the same unusual sound and performance issues. I'm seeking advice on possible root causes or next steps to resolve this problem. Any insights into whether these codes point to mechanical failure, sensor issues, or other underlying problems would be greatly appreciated.
Could the engine be misfiring? The sound might resemble knocking. A compression test—both wet and dry—is recommended to determine if any cylinders have low compression. If so, engine replacement may be necessary. Pinging or pre-ignition could also trigger knock-related codes. More details about driving conditions and symptoms would help provide a more accurate diagnosis.
