2006 Buick Rendezvous P0716 Code: Intermittent Diagnosis and Solutions

Model: 2006 Buick Rendevous Fault Code: P0716 Posted: 2016-12-12 11:47

I'm experiencing a recurring P0716 diagnostic code on my 2006 Buick Rendezvous. The code appears intermittently—sometimes days later, other times weeks or months after clearing it—which suggests it's not a permanent failure but rather a condition that reoccurs under specific circumstances. I've already inspected and cleaned the 50-pin connector using contact cleaner, ensuring all wires are securely seated. Despite this, the issue persists. Freeze frame data consistently shows the vehicle operating below 2000 RPM and under 25 mph when the code is triggered. This behavior has led me to suspect a potential sensor or wiring issue related to transmission input. Given these symptoms, I'm seeking insight into possible root causes—particularly whether it could be linked to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or other components in the transmission control system.

Refer to TSB #02-07-30-022B, which addresses a known issue with the 2006 Buick Rendezvous and may provide a targeted solution for P0716 code occurrences.

Thanks—will re-inspect the 20-pin connector as it might be an overlooked connection point, especially given its role in speed sensor signaling.

I also have P0716 on my 2006 Buick Rendezvous. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), but the warning light returned. I'm now seeing no voltage at either pin when the ignition is on—should there be a reference voltage? Also, I notice another issue sensor in the system, but I'm unsure how to locate it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Check if the vehicle speed sensor has a proper 5-volt reference signal—lack of this could explain intermittent P0716 readings.

Is this vehicle equipped with a 3.5L engine? This detail may help narrow down the transmission or sensor-related causes.
