2005 Nissan Xterra OBD2 Codes P0011 and P0021 After Timing Chain Replacement

Model: 2005 Nissan Xterra Fault Code: P0111 Posted: 2016-09-17 08:34

I own a 2005 Nissan Xterra and recently had the timing chain replaced at a mechanic shop. Since then, my vehicle has triggered two diagnostic trouble codes: P0011 and P0021. I'm concerned whether these codes indicate that the mechanic made an error during the repair or if they are simply related to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system. As I understand, VVT is not a single component but a system involving cam timing, solenoids, and actuators. My vehicle now stalls intermittently and takes several attempts to start—especially after being idle for some time. I've already replaced the spark plugs as advised by the shop, but the issue persists. I'm seeking clarification on whether these codes are directly linked to improper cam timing or if further diagnostics are needed.

P0011 and P0021 relate to camshaft timing, which involves the timing chain, solenoids, and actuators—all part of the VVT system. You should not have received a vehicle with these codes after a timing chain replacement. These codes indicate improper cam positioning. The VVT system is not a single component but an integrated system. See: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0011, https://www.obd-codes.com/p0021

Could you explain this in simpler terms so I can better understand what's going on with my vehicle?

This suggests the mechanic may have installed the timing chain incorrectly, causing improper camshaft alignment.

The issue needs to be inspected—did the shop return your vehicle with the check engine light illuminated? What did they say when you contacted them?

They told me that if both codes P0011 and P0021 appear together, spark plugs must be replaced. I’ve already done this, but the vehicle still stalls and takes a long time to start after being idle.

The check engine light didn’t come on immediately—only the next day. The shop said they saw the codes during their scan and cleared them using their diagnostic tool.

The codes are still present. P0011 and P0021 both relate to camshaft timing, not spark plugs. Clearing a code does not fix the underlying issue—it only resets a test sequence. I suspect your mechanic is avoiding proper diagnosis rather than solving it. This behavior is inconsistent with professional standards from a union or ASE-certified shop.

Thanks for the clarification—I'm going to take my vehicle back to the shop to address this issue.
