2005 Mazda Tribute 2.3L Model with P1235 Code: Engine Dies After Running, Fuel Pump and PCM Replacements Failed

Model: 2005 Mazda Tribute 2.3l Fault Code: P1235 Posted: 2017-05-22 15:13

My 2005 Mazda Tribute 2.3L vehicle began running roughly and then died unexpectedly. It failed to restart after shutdown. Initial diagnosis indicated the fuel pump was not operating. I replaced the fuel pump, but the engine still won't start. Subsequent replacements included the drive module, fuel pressure sensor, and all relays. The vehicle would run for approximately 15 to 30 minutes before dying again. During operation, the PCM relay became extremely hot. After replacing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), it ran for another 30 minutes before stalling once more. The persistent fault code is P1235. P1235 Diagnostic Condition: When the key is on, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an unexpected voltage condition on the fuel pump relay circuit during the CCM test. Possible Causes: • Fuel pump relay control circuit is open • Fuel pump relay control circuit is shorted to ground • Fuel pump relay power circuit is open • PCM has failed I am seeking advice on how to resolve this issue, especially since multiple components have been replaced without lasting success.

Check the fuel pump circuit for any short to ground. Was the P1235 code present before replacing the fuel pump? Have there been any recent modifications or repairs on the vehicle? Trouble Code Conditions: P123-35: When the key is ON, the PCM detects an unexpected voltage condition on the fuel pump relay circuit during the CCM test. Possible Causes: • Fuel pump relay control circuit is open • Fuel pump relay control circuit is shorted to ground • Fuel pump relay power circuit is open • PCM has failed

The vehicle was successfully started and ran for a short period before the owner decided to trade it in. No further diagnostics were performed after that.
