2005 Ford Freestar P0171 P2195 P2097: How to Diagnose and Fix Vacuum Leak Issues

Model: 2005 Ford Freestar Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2016-02-03 14:31

I've checked the OBD-II codes for both fuel banks. I've already replaced the MAF sensor, PCV valve, and associated hose, but the codes P0171, P2195, and P2197 persist. What is the most likely root cause? The presence of these three codes strongly suggests a vacuum leak, leading to a lean air-fuel mixture and low oxygen sensor readings. I'm considering using the traditional 'spray test' method to locate the source of the leak. Any additional troubleshooting tips or common failure points for this 2005 Ford Freestar model would be greatly appreciated.

Check out this article for more details on P0171: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171. Is P0171 the only code you're seeing? If not, that may point to a broader system issue.

I recently encountered P2195 and P2197 codes on my own vehicle — they appeared suddenly and were hard to diagnose initially.

All three codes—P0171, P2195, and P2197—are typically indicative of a vacuum leak. This causes the engine to run lean, resulting in low oxygen sensor voltage readings. Try performing the 'spray test' with carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner to identify where the leak is occurring.

I'll try the spray test and update my findings. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you have access to a smoke pump, it's one of the most reliable ways to locate vacuum leaks. I experienced similar codes on my 2005 Ford F-150 Heritage with a 4.2L engine. A makeshift smoke pump helped me identify two issues: a leak in the PCV hose connected to the throttle body and another between the intake manifold and intake plenum. Fixing these required some mechanical work, but it resolved all the codes. This method is highly effective for diagnosing vacuum system faults.
