2005 Ford F150 XLT 5.4L Triton Engine P2198 and Misfire Codes Diagnosis Guide

Model: 2005 Ford F150 XLT 5.4 Triton Fault Code: P0300 Posted: 2015-03-05 06:40

My 2005 Ford F150 XLT recently developed multiple engine fault codes after experiencing a severely rough idle and subsequent shutdown. The diagnostic trouble codes include: P0022 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing Over Retarded Bank 2, P0300 - Random Misfire Detected, along with specific cylinder misfires P0305, P0307, and P0308, and P2198 - O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Rich (Bank 2, Sensor 1). I've already spent $750 replacing all coil packs and spark plugs in May of this year, but the issue persists. Has anyone encountered these codes on a 2005 Ford F150 XLT with the 5.4L Triton engine? What is the recommended diagnostic path to resolve this? I'm looking for clear, step-by-step guidance on how to troubleshoot and repair this issue without unnecessary expenses.

Start with investigating the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) system. Check oil level and condition—ensure you're using the correct viscosity and type of oil. Low or degraded oil can cause VCT solenoids to stick. Consider performing an oil pressure check; if low, adding a bottle of 'Rislone' may help free up any stuck VCT solenoid components. Next, address the P2198 O2 sensor signal stuck rich issue. Use a fuel pressure gauge and perform a leak-down test at crankshaft position (KOEO) to assess for fuel system leaks or excessive pressure. Inspect the spark plugs—check if they are fouled, wet, dry, black, or tan in color. Confirm that you used the correct plug type during your previous replacement. These steps should provide initial insights. Afterward, use an OBD2 scanner to retrieve additional data such as engine temperature (ECT) and other live parameters for deeper analysis.
