2005 Ford Five Hundred P0175, P0172, P0191, P0300, P0306, P0450 - Black Smoke, Jerking, Poor Power at Idle

Model: 2005 Ford 500 Fault Code: P0172 Posted: 2017-10-28 20:21

My 2005 Ford Five Hundred is experiencing multiple OBD-II fault codes: P0175, P0172, P0191, P0300, P0306, and P0452. The vehicle hesitates to start and requires the accelerator to be held at full throttle to begin running smoothly. Once started with the throttle wide open, it lacks normal power output and emits heavy black smoke from the exhaust. This black smoke diminishes after the engine reaches operating temperature—typically after idling or revving for 2-3 minutes up to 2,500 rpm. When starting from a stop, the car jerks violently (as if severely low on fuel), lacks power, and continues to surge forward. At speeds between 45-65 mph, the engine runs well until the throttle is released; at that point, it jerks several times before responding again—sometimes with continued surging or jerking throughout the drive. I have already replaced: fuel pump, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil and oil filter, and air filter. The mass airflow sensor (MAF) was cleaned using brake cleaner, dried thoroughly, and reinstalled. All troubleshooting steps were performed, yet the issue persists. Current OBD-II codes remain unchanged: P0175, P0172, P0191, P0300, P0306, P0452. There are no available Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) addressing this specific combination of symptoms and codes in the 2005 Ford Five Hundred model.

Prioritize diagnosing P0191 as it relates to fuel pressure or sensor issues. For reference, see: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0191
