P0300, P0301, P0022, and P0345 Fault Codes on 2005 Ford F-150 5.4L V8 - Idling Issues and Power Loss After 55mph

Model: 2005 F-150 Fault Code: P0300 Posted: 2020-12-19 14:26

Hello, I have a 2005 Ford F-150 with a 5.4L V8 engine (4x4) that has started exhibiting idle instability, rough running, and occasional stalling at idle. The engine begins knocking and sputtering when idling, especially during acceleration from a stop. It does not stall completely but feels significantly underpowered after reaching 55 mph. The check engine light activates intermittently, and the OBD2 diagnostic codes displayed are: P0300 (random/multiple misfire), P0301 (cylinder 1 misfire), P0022 (intake camshaft position sensor timing issue), and P0345 (camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction). The engine has accumulated 162,000 miles. The symptoms are not constant but appear and disappear unpredictably—temperature does not seem to affect them. When the vehicle is in gear, it sputters at idle; shifting into neutral resolves this issue immediately. I’m wondering if a professional diagnostic test would help pinpoint the root cause. Would I be better off getting a full OBD2 scan with code interpretation? Any insights or suggestions on what to check next would be greatly appreciated. Note: This is not 100% consistent, but it occurs frequently enough to be concerning.

A qualified auto shop should be able to provide a clear diagnosis using an OBD2 scanner. If they perform the diagnostic and repair work, they are responsible for ensuring the issue is resolved. Regarding P0345 (Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction), possible causes include: - A damaged wire or connector in the sensor circuit (shorted, grounded, or broken) - Failure of the camshaft position sensor itself - Possible failure of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - An open circuit in the crankshaft position sensor system For P0022 (Intake Camshaft Position Sensor Timing Issue), potential causes may include: - Incorrect camshaft timing - Wiring or harness faults in the intake valve timing control solenoid system - Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber - A failed or stuck-open timing valve control solenoid More information available at: https://www.ford.com/support/tech-info/p0022

Some auto parts stores offer free or low-cost OBD2 diagnostic tools that can be loaned out for basic code reading and troubleshooting—this could help you identify the issue without a full shop visit.
