2005 Dodge Neon P0304 Code: Engine Stalls at 2000 RPM, Resolves After Multiple Starts

Model: 2005 dodge neon Fault Code: P0304 Posted: 2008-09-29 22:35

My 2005 Dodge Neon is throwing a P0304 diagnostic trouble code. The issue occurs when I start the car — the check engine light comes on immediately and the vehicle will not exceed 2000 RPM. While driving, the engine shakes severely and jerks back and forth. However, if I turn off the car and restart it multiple times (three to four times), the problem resolves temporarily and the check engine light turns off. The car drives normally after these restarts. I'm not sure what's causing this issue. Any insight or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Start by replacing the spark plugs and ignition wires. Dodge recommends spark plug replacement at 30,000 miles and spark plugs plus wires at 60,000 miles.

I recommend beginning with spark plugs and ignition wires. Make sure to use high-quality parts — avoid low-cost brands like AutoZone.

Could a Mass Airflow (MAP) sensor be the cause of this misfire?

I've never seen a MAP sensor replacement fix a P0304 code on any Dodge Neon. The most likely issue is worn spark plugs and ignition wires. If you remove the plugs, look for carbon tracking on the ceramic insulator — this indicates arcing to ground instead of through the center electrode. If you see these tracks, both new plugs and new wires are required. Installing new plugs with old wires will result in the same problem recurring.
