2005 Dodge Grand Caravan P0700 and P0420 Code Explanation and Affordable Fixes

Model: 2005 Dodge Caravan Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2015-02-13 08:39

I own a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. Recently, the check engine light turned on. I visited an auto parts store where they scanned the vehicle and found two diagnostic trouble codes: P0700 and P0420. What do these codes mean, and why did they appear? My van is running smoothly — no performance issues. Do I need a tune-up, or could this be something else? I'm looking for an inexpensive solution and would appreciate any guidance on the next steps. Thanks in advance for your help!

P0700 is a generic code indicating a transmission control system issue — is your transmission functioning properly? P0420 points to a catalytic converter performance problem and should be diagnosed before replacement. Do not replace the catalytic converter without first confirming the actual cause. Have you experienced any recent electrical issues, such as deep water exposure, dead battery, or snow burial? Have there been any repairs or modifications made recently? If no such events occurred and your transmission is operating normally, try clearing the codes and monitor if they return. Let us know your plan. I recently resolved the P0420 issue on my own 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. The fix involved replacing the downstream oxygen sensor and using a check engine light eliminator adapter (~$30 total). This solution worked effectively without needing a full catalytic converter replacement. For reference, here's a YouTube video walkthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkhDeOvvvX0&t=324s
