2005 Chrysler Sebring P0158 OBD2 Fault: Air Care Failure and Insurance Policy Requirement

Model: 2005 Chrysler Sebring Fault Code: P0158 Posted: 2014-06-04 10:56

Hi, I own a 2005 Chrysler Sebring and recently took it in for air care testing. The vehicle failed the emissions inspection with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0158. According to the On Board Diagnostic Test results, the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) was lit and showed 'Fail' under both KOER (Key-On Engine Running) and MIL Command Status. I have scheduled an appointment with a Chrysler dealership for repair, but during my visit at the air care center, they advised that I must purchase a 3-month insurance policy to proceed. My current insurance expires on June 16th. I would like to know if, after completing the repairs at the dealership or an independent shop, I can return the next day for retesting without needing another insurance policy. Can someone clarify whether this requirement is standard and if P0158 can be resolved through a non-dealer service? Thank you in advance.

I'm not familiar with the specific regulations in your region, but the connection between auto insurance and emission testing appears unclear. You do NOT need to use a Chrysler dealership to fix P0158. A qualified independent mechanic can diagnose and repair this issue. The MIL Command Status showing 'Fail' is likely due to a faulty oxygen sensor bulb or wiring—check for basic electrical issues first.
