2004 VW Passat Won't Start with P0322 and P0688 Fault Codes - Diagnosis Guide

Model: 2004 VW Passat Fault Code: P0322 Posted: 2017-02-05 12:38

I own a 2004 Volkswagen Passat that has developed a starting issue. The vehicle previously exhibited rough idling and misfires, so I replaced the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor—however, the problem persists. After attempting to drive it for two hours and parking it overnight, the car now fails to start. It displays two diagnostic trouble codes: P0322 (Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction) and P0688 (ECM Power Relay Circuit Fault). I'm unsure whether this points to a faulty crankshaft position sensor or an issue with the ECM power relay. Where is the ECM power relay located in a 2004 VW Passat? What are the next steps for troubleshooting? Thanks for any guidance, Bruce.

Begin by verifying battery voltage during cranking. The voltage should remain above 10 volts while starting; ideally, it should be around 12.7 volts when the engine is off and approximately 14 volts when running. A low voltage reading may indicate a weak battery or electrical connection issues that could contribute to P0322 and P0688 codes.
