2004 Subaru Forester P0483 Code: Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction Explained

Model: 2004 Subaru Forester Fault Code: P0483 Posted: 2007-04-19 21:34

Hello! My check engine light came on recently, and I pulled the OBD-II diagnostic code — it's P0483. This code stands for 'Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction'. After researching, I understand that a 'rationality check' in OBD systems refers to a test where the engine evaluates whether the cooling fan is responding correctly to input signals. If the data from the fans doesn't meet expected thresholds, this fault code triggers. I tried a common troubleshooting method: turning on the AC and letting it run for about one minute. Both cooling fans engaged — but only for 5–10 seconds each time. I suspect this is due to the current outdoor temperature being quite low. My question is: Is this behavior normal for a 2004 Subaru Forester? Can I simply clear the P0483 code and monitor the situation without further action? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
