2004 Pontiac Grand Prix P0442 Code: Gas Cap Issue and Smog Check Requirements
A few weeks ago, my check engine light came on and I started seeing "gas cap removed" warnings on the dashboard. I would retighten the gas cap each time, which would temporarily resolve the warning, but the check engine light remained illuminated. Over the past month, the check engine light has stayed on without any new gas cap warnings. Recently, I failed a smog inspection due to a P044-2 diagnostic code. If the issue was caused by a faulty gas cap, should the check engine light turn off automatically, or is it necessary to clear the codes? Additionally, if I clear the P0442 code, do I need to drive a certain number of miles without the warning returning in order to pass smog inspection?
Have you tried replacing the gas cap? A new one may resolve the P0442 code if it's related to a fuel system leak.
