2004 Mazda 6 2.3L Engine Misfire with Rich Mixture Smell - OBD Code $07E8/$07E9

Model: 2004 Mazda 6 Fault Code: P0300 Posted: 2014-03-11 13:02

My 2004 Mazda 6 2.3L is experiencing engine misfiring and a strong rich mixture odor. The diagnostic tool shows codes $07E8 and $07E9. I'm concerned about whether these are standard OBD-II codes or hexdecimal values, as the format doesn't match typical P#### code patterns. Can I safely drive approximately 15 miles to the nearest repair shop? Is it safe for the catalytic converter during short-distance travel despite the misfire and rich mixture? Any insights on interpreting these codes would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using an OBDII-compatible code reader (Big Banana B7700), but upon connecting, the device switched to a different diagnostic mode. I'm currently trying to retrieve standard OBD-II codes (e.g., P####) instead of hexdecimal values. The shop advised driving 12 miles to them—though the engine is misfiring and running rich, they believe it may not damage the catalytic converter over short distances. My location is Salt Lake City, Utah.
