2004 Chevrolet Malibu P0420 and P2765 Code: Low Coolant Warning Despite Normal Temperature

Model: 2004 Malibu Fault Code: P2764 Posted: 2014-06-03 11:23

Hello everyone, I recently scanned my 2004 Chevrolet Malibu (2.2L 4-cylinder engine) and received the following diagnostic trouble codes: P0420, P2764. Additionally, the dashboard continuously displays 'LOW COOLANT' even though the engine never overheats and I don't feel any need to add coolant. Could anyone help me understand what these codes mean and how to diagnose or fix them? Codes: - P0420: Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) - P2764: TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) Circuit Malfunction I have not had any recent repairs or major issues with the vehicle. The coolant level is at normal levels, and the engine runs normally without overheating. Any insights into possible causes or next steps would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend starting a new topic for clarity — but here's what you need to know: - P0420: This code indicates the catalytic converter is not performing efficiently. Refer to OBD-II code P0420 at http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420. - P2764: This points to a TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) circuit issue — the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is not detecting correct voltage signals. There may be an electrical fault or sensor malfunction in this circuit. Regarding the 'LOW COOLANT' warning: If the coolant level is full and the engine doesn’t overheat, the issue is likely with the coolant level sensor itself. Check the wiring connections first; if they are intact, the sensor probably needs replacement. Note: There's a known TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) related to this code that may apply — especially for vehicles equipped with aftermarket remote starters or alarms. Be sure to verify your vehicle’s history and any installed accessories.
