2004 Kia Rio P0734 and P0340 Codes: Engine Won't Turn Over, Possible Timing Belt Failure at Low RPM

Model: 2004 Kia Rio Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2015-11-16 16:58

I own a 2004 Kia Rio with 107,000 kilometers. While driving, the engine suddenly died and now the vehicle will not crank — it exhibits symptoms of a seized engine. The onboard diagnostic system shows two fault codes: P0734 and P0340. The timing belt has never been replaced, and I suspect it may have broken. At the time of failure, the RPM was approximately 900. If the timing belt did break at this low RPM, could there be significant internal engine damage? The vehicle is equipped with a 1.6L SOHC engine, which is an interference-type engine — meaning that a timing belt failure can cause severe internal damage if not addressed promptly. I am seeking advice on whether these codes point to a broken timing belt or another issue, and what steps I should take next to prevent further damage.

I recently replaced the cam position sensor (CMP) on my 2004 Kia Rio, and after the replacement, the check engine light triggered with code P0340 — indicating a cam position sensor malfunction. This suggests that a faulty CMP can cause similar symptoms to those reported in this post.

Why did you replace the (CMP) cam position sensor? Regarding potential engine damage: The 2004 Kia Rio with a 1.6L SOHC engine is an interference engine. In such engines, even at low RPMs like 900, a broken timing belt can cause piston and valve collision, leading to significant internal damage. Therefore, if the timing belt has failed, immediate inspection and repair are critical to avoid costly repairs.
