2004 GMC Sierra P0131, P138, P171, P1133 - Upper Plenum Needed? Diagnosis Question

Model: 2004 GMC Sierra Fault Code: P0131 Posted: 2012-03-05 17:05

I recently had a diagnostic check on my 2004 GMC Sierra, and the shop reported several trouble codes: P0131, P138, P171, and P1130. They advised replacing the upper plenum as part of the repair. However, when I contacted the dealership with my VIN to verify parts availability, they informed me that my vehicle does not have an upper plenum. This raises serious concerns about the accuracy of the diagnosis from a certified mechanic. I've already replaced the spark plugs and wires, cleaned the throttle body, and swapped out the downstream O2 sensor — yet the rough idle issue persists. Given these conflicting pieces of information, I'm wondering if there's a misdiagnosis or misunderstanding in how the codes relate to engine components. Any insights or experiences with similar issues on 2004 GMC Sierra models would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave.

Your 2004 GMC Sierra does have an upper intake manifold — it's a common component in that model year. The discrepancy between the mechanic's diagnosis and the parts department's response suggests a communication gap. I recommend bringing your repair estimate to the parts department for clarification. They can cross-check the part numbers and vehicle specs directly. It's unlikely that a faulty upper plenum would cause O2 sensor codes like P1133 or P0131; those are more typically related to oxygen sensor readings, fuel trim issues, or vacuum leaks. Double-checking with the parts team in person could resolve this confusion.
