I own a 2004 Ford Ranger XLT with a 4.0L V6 engine and have reached 185,000 miles. Recently, the check engine light activated, displaying diagnostic codes P0420 and P0430. The truck has since developed poor fuel economy, rough idle, and intermittently stalls when the air conditioning is turned on. I removed the catalytic converter to troubleshoot, but the fault codes persist. Despite this, the vehicle continues to run poorly. What could be causing these issues, and what are effective solutions for fixing both P0420 and P0430 codes in a 2004 Ford Ranger?

Removing the catalytic converter will not clear P0420 or P0430 codes. These faults indicate emission system issues, and you must diagnose and fix the root cause—such as faulty sensors or exhaust flow problems—before replacing any components.

The most common issue in 2004 Ford Rangers is a cracked rubber elbow in the vacuum line leading to the PCV valve. I recently replaced this component on my own Ranger, as well as two other 2004 models with similar symptoms. This repair often resolves idle problems and improves engine performance.
