2004 Ford F-450 Powerstroke Won't Start with P0611 and P0232 Codes - Need Help Diagnosing FICM or Fuel System Issue

Model: 2004 Ford F450 Powerstroke Fault Code: P0232 Posted: 2016-04-25 21:50

I own a 2004 Ford F-450 Powerstroke that won't start consistently. After replacing all eight fuel injectors and the oil pressure pump, the issue persists. The truck shows diagnostic codes P0611 (Fuel Injector Control Module Communication Failure) and P0232 (Secondary Fuel Pump Circuit High). The engine sometimes starts after prolonged cranking and runs normally for a while, but other times it simply cranks without starting—especially around 3 PM. I've tested the vehicle with professional scan tools, which show P0611 and P0232 even after clearing the codes. I believe one of the FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module) connectors may have been damaged in a previous repair. I’ve checked multiple YouTube tutorials on FICM testing, and voltage readings show 48V at the module—within expected range—but the issue remains unresolved. This is my first time working with a V8 engine, so I’m lacking experience in diagnosing these systems. I have another 2007 Ford F-550 with the same engine, but I'm hesitant to swap parts due to potential compatibility issues. Before ordering a new FICM or harness, I’d appreciate expert advice on whether this issue is likely related to the FICM, wiring, or another underlying problem. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated—especially for someone with limited V8 engine experience.

The year and model are important—your truck is a 2004 6.0L Powerstroke. First, check the recommended resources for troubleshooting tutorials. Powerstrokes are specialized vehicles requiring specific knowledge in diagnostics and repair. Search online for 'Powerstroke FICM test procedure' to find reliable guides.

Confirmed: 2004 Ford F-450 6.0L Powerstroke. Today at around 5 PM, after extended cranking, the engine started and ran smoothly—no issues during operation. However, when I tried to start it in the morning, it appeared to hesitate or stall mid-crank. Even with new fuel pump, injectors, and oil pressure pump installed, the problem persists. I suspect a damaged FICM connector from prior repairs. All diagnostic tests show P0611 and P0232, and even after clearing codes, these remain present. We’ve also tested fuses and wiring—no obvious faults. The 2007 F-550 with the same engine has a different FICM setup; I’m unsure if it would work in my 2004 F-450 or if the module is incompatible.

I recall when this truck was first delivered, there was a label on the steering wheel stating: 'If this truck stops, do not invest money—just replace the truck.' This warning may have been a caution from previous owners about recurring mechanical failures in early 2004 Powerstroke models.
