2004 Ford Explorer 4.0L P0506 - Low Idle and Engine Dies After Startup

Model: 2004 Ford Explorer Fault Code: P0506 Posted: 2007-12-17 22:43

My 2004 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L engine has recently developed a starting issue. One morning, the vehicle would not start properly—once it did, the idle was extremely low and the engine died shortly after. I managed to restart it by keeping my foot on the gas until the engine warmed up, after which it idled steadily but at a very low RPM. The check engine light came on with code P0506, indicating an idle air control system issue. I've already replaced the spark plugs and changed the fuel filter about 2,500 miles ago, so these aren or related to this problem. Despite trying various fixes, the issue persists. What could be causing the P0506 code in a 2004 Ford Explorer 4.0L? I'm considering contacting Ford support but am unsure where to begin—any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Possible causes include vacuum leaks, a dirty throttle body, or a clogged idle air control (IAC) valve. These are common issues in 2004 Ford Explorer 4.0L models and can trigger the P0506 code due to improper idle air regulation.
