2004 Ford F150 5.4L V8 Fault Codes P2106, P2006, P1000, P0645, P0443 Explained - DIY Repair Guide

Model: 2004 F150 Fault Code: P0443 Posted: 2008-11-23 10:55

I own a 2004 Ford F150 4x4 SuperCrew Lariat with a 5.4L V8 engine. I've been encountering multiple diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and am unsure whether these represent isolated issues or are symptoms of a single underlying fault. The current codes include: - P0010, P0020: Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system faults - P0102, P0135, P0155: Mass Airflow Sensor and Oxygen Sensor issues - P0443, P0446: Evaporative Emission System pressure sensor faults - P1000, P2006, P2106: Engine control-related codes (related to fuel injection and timing) I'm trying to determine if this is a single component failure causing multiple errors or if each code represents a separate issue. I also want to know whether these problems can be resolved through DIY repairs or require professional diagnosis. The truck currently runs sluggishly, has poor throttle response, takes longer to start, and fuel economy has dropped from 15.5 mpg to around 11 mpg in city driving. I've cleared the codes and driven the vehicle, but they return after a short period of use. I'm seeking expert advice on possible root causes and whether I should attempt repairs myself or consult a mechanic.

Clear the fault codes using an OBD2 scanner, then drive the vehicle under normal conditions to see if any codes return. This helps determine if the issues are intermittent or persistent.

I cleared the codes and drove the truck under regular use. All fault codes returned after just a few miles, including the EVAP-related ones. The vehicle exhibits poor throttle response, struggles to start, and fuel efficiency has dropped significantly—down from 15.5 mpg to approximately 11 mpg in city driving.

If possible, please share the 8th digit of your VIN as it may help identify specific engine control module (ECM) software versions or model-specific issues related to these codes.

Confirmed—EVAP codes also return. The 8th digit of my VIN is '5'. This corresponds to the 2004 F150 5.4L V8 with a specific ECM version that may be prone to these types of faults.
