2004 Ford F150 P0053, P0132, P2195, P2196 Fault Codes & Transmission Slipping in Overdrive - OBDII Scanner Help

Model: 2004 F150 Fault Code: P0053 Posted: 2014-07-09 07:26

I own a 2004 Ford F15-0 with a 4.6L V8 engine, automatic transmission, 2WD, and has accumulated 227,000 miles. I recently purchased a new Cen-Tech (Harbor Freight) OBDII/EOBD scanner to diagnose issues. The scanner is detecting the following diagnostic trouble codes: - P0053: Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1) - P0132: Oxygen Sensor Circuit Low Signal (Bank 1, Sensor 1) - P2195: Fuel Trim 2 Too Rich - P2196: Fuel Trim 2 Too Lean These codes suggest potential issues with the oxygen sensor and fuel mixture. While I initially thought replacing the O2 sensor might resolve this, I'm seeking confirmation on whether that's the correct repair step or if there are other underlying causes. Additionally, the airbag warning light remains illuminated on the dashboard. After checking thoroughly, I cannot locate the key-actuated ON/OFF switch—some reports suggest it may be located in the passenger side door panel. Could this be a wiring issue or a faulty module? I'm also having difficulty accessing the overhead interior map lights to replace the bulbs without damaging the lens. Is there a recommended method or tool to safely open these lights? Most concerning is the transmission behavior: when overdrive is engaged, the truck slips in and out of gears while driving. The issue does not occur when overdrive is turned off—under those conditions, it runs smoothly in third gear at approximately 1,800 RPM at 40 MPH. The OBDII scanner should provide drive cycle fault codes, but I haven't yet successfully triggered a full diagnostic cycle. I'm currently waiting for Pacific Standard Time to call Harbor Freight's technical support line for guidance on how to perform this step. I've consulted three different auto repair shops regarding the transmission issue—each provided a different diagnosis. As noted in Click and Clack’s research on repair shop honesty, over 80% of shops are honest but incompetent. This has made it difficult to trust any single recommendation. Any insights or expert advice on how to properly diagnose and fix these issues would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Bruce Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
