2004 Ford F150 3V 5.4L Engine Fault Codes P0022, P0351, P0171 - Diagnosis and Solutions

Model: 2004 F150 3V 5.4L Fault Code: P0022 Posted: 2018-04-08 20:33

I own a 2004 Ford F150 3V 5.4L engine vehicle that has recently triggered the following diagnostic trouble codes: P0022, P0351, and P0171. I currently use a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner to monitor live data while driving, but I'm unable to interpret what these codes mean in practical terms. The O2 sensor readings on both engine banks occasionally show negative values for trim, which is unusual. I've already replaced several components including spark plugs and coils, variable valve timing (VCT) system, engine harness, valve cover gaskets, camshaft position sensors, intake manifold gaskets, coolant gaskets, throttle body, mass air flow sensor, fuel pump assembly, and fuel pump driver module. I've also checked nearly all fuses with no success. I notice a strong fuel smell during startup, and the scanner indicates that all systems are functioning normally at start-up except for the catalytic converter system. A distinct clicking noise is audible on the driver's side—this sound appears to originate either from the exhaust or inside the engine block. The vehicle exhibits a rough idle and loses power when climbing hills. I'm seeking expert advice on how to properly diagnose and resolve these issues, especially given that multiple components have already been replaced.

Thank you for pointing that out—there appears to be a typo in the original post. The correct code is P0171, not P0717. This correction is important as it affects the diagnosis path.

For detailed information on oil pressure and VVT issues specific to your 2004 F150 3V 5.4L engine, refer to FordTechMakuloco.com. If replacing the VCT solenoid did not resolve the issue, low oil pressure could be a contributing factor.

I encountered a similar P0022 code on my 2002 Ford Explorer. After bringing it in for inspection, the engine light activated and the diagnostic tool returned P0022—this suggests that timing or sensor issues may be common across these models.

A P0022 code typically indicates one or more of the following: incorrect camshaft timing, wiring faults in the intake timing control valve solenoid system, continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber, or a failed VCT solenoid (stuck open). Proper diagnosis should include checking the timing chain, harness connections, and solenoid operation.

I appreciate your question—what does P0022 actually mean? The service engine light came on after I returned from a garage visit. It seems like a sensor or wiring issue may have been dislodged during maintenance.

It's advisable to return to the repair shop. If the check engine light was not active before and only appeared after service, it’s possible that a sensor or wiring harness was accidentally disconnected or damaged—this is consistent with the P0022 fault code.
