2004 Dodge Status R/T Coupe 3.0L A/T - P0455 Code: How to Diagnose and Fix Without Gas Leak Signs
Hello everyone, I'm looking for help with a persistent P0455 diagnostic code on my wife's 2004 Dodge Status R/T Coupe (3.0L, automatic transmission, 172k miles). The car has no noticeable gas fumes or visible leaks, and I've already checked the fuel cap, all hoses, and performed a smoke test with a friend—results showed no issues. Despite this, the check engine light is triggered by code P0455 (Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected). What else should I inspect? Is it possible that the issue lies in the purge solenoid or vapor canister despite no visible leaks?
The purge solenoid is a likely culprit. It's located inside the fuel tank ventilation system, typically near the fuel filler neck or in the engine bay behind the intake manifold. To test it: disconnect the electrical connector and use a multimeter to check for proper vacuum operation—when the engine is running, it should hold vacuum. If it fails to maintain vacuum, replace it. Note that 'vacuum switching valve' is often used interchangeably with purge solenoid in older models like this one.
