2004 Chevy Silverado 5.3L Vortec Engine P0128 Code: Slow Warm-Up and Temperature Fluctuations

Model: 2004 Chevy Silverado Fault Code: P0128 Posted: 2017-04-13 20:43

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado equipped with the 5.3L Vortec engine. I recently received a P0128 diagnostic trouble code, which indicates an issue with the engine coolant temperature sensor or system. The truck consistently struggles to reach its normal operating temperature—on hot days, it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to warm up. Once it reaches operating temperature, the reading drops suddenly and then fluctuates between high and low values, causing intermittent performance issues. I recently replaced the thermostat, but upon inspection, half of it was missing. Could this be a sign of a faulty or improperly installed unit? What other potential causes should I consider for the P0128 code and temperature instability?

I'm not certain what happened to the original thermostat, but I recommend installing a new AC Delco thermostat with the correct temperature rating of 195°F. Note: Some older vehicles had modified thermostats installed to keep engine temperatures lower—this was often done for cost and convenience, but it's ineffective and can lead to poor performance. The traditional thermostat is a simple component, and aftermarket units have been known to fail due to poor quality or incorrect calibration. For reliability, OEM-grade thermostats are strongly recommended.

No, I am not the original owner of this truck. I purchased it last summer and only recently addressed the thermostat replacement—this issue had been present for some time before I took action.
