2004 Chevy Cavalier P0130 Code: Won't Start After Cold Starts - O2 Sensor & Spark Plug Replacement Needed?

Model: 2004 Chevy Cavalier Fault Code: P0130 Posted: 2009-08-10 11:11

Hello! Thanks for this helpful forum. My girlfriend's 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier has been running roughly, especially in cold weather. Yesterday, it started but ran very poorly—she managed only about 10 feet before the engine died completely. The vehicle is displaying a P013-0 diagnostic trouble code (DTC), which indicates a faulty oxygen sensor. I'm planning to replace both oxygen sensors and the spark plugs, as they appear blackened, suggesting the engine has been running rich. My main concern: Since the car cranks over but won't start, is this typical behavior associated with P0130? Or could there be another underlying issue? Additionally, I noticed that a rich fuel condition didn’t trigger any additional codes. Is it possible for a rich mixture to go unnoticed by the ECU under certain conditions? Any insights or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Matt

Try unplugging the oxygen sensor and see if the engine starts. If it doesn’t start, treat this as a full no-start issue and don’t over-interpret the P0130 code. Check fuel pressure, ensure spark strength is adequate, and verify that ignition timing is correct before concluding the problem lies with the sensors.
