2004 Chevy Blazer P0101 Code: Poor Acceleration, Stalls at Low RPMs - Diagnosis & Fixes

Model: 2004 Chevy Blazer Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2010-03-16 16:58

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer displaying trouble code P0101. The vehicle fails to accelerate beyond 2500 RPM and often stalls while driving. Acceleration is severely limited, making the truck essentially undrivable under normal conditions. I've already cleaned and electrically tested the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor, and based on my observations, it does not appear to be the root cause—though it's the only code present. Previously, I experienced a P0300 random misfire code, which has not returned even after multiple stall runs. Fuel pressure remains within acceptable range for this model, but it fluctuates significantly (up to 4 psi variation), indicating instability. Given these symptoms and test results, what other diagnostic steps should I take? The vehicle is currently unsafe to drive and requires a reliable fix as soon as possible.

Check for exhaust system restrictions. Additionally, if you disconnect the MAF sensor during a road test, does the engine rev higher or show improved performance? This can help determine whether the MAF is contributing to the issue.

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer with a 4.3L engine and also have P0101. It struggles to accelerate past 30 mph, and at wide open throttle, the engine completely loses power. I hear a hissing sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Notably, it idles normally.

As mentioned by Comp, ensure the MAF sensor is clean and inspect the exhaust system for blockages. These are common causes of P0101 symptoms in Blazer models. Good luck—please update if you find a resolution.

Did you ever identify the root cause? My 2002 Chevrolet ZR2 is exhibiting identical symptoms, getting progressively worse with each drive attempt. I'm curious what repair path a mechanic might recommend for this issue.

The likely culprit is excessive exhaust backpressure—check for clogged or failing catalytic converters, which can cause P0101 and lead to poor engine performance and stalling under load.
