2003 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition P0300 and P0304 Misfire Codes with Temperature Light Issue

Model: 2003 VW Jetta Fault Code: P0300 Posted: 2007-11-29 19:54

My 2003 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition (1.8L gasoline) is showing diagnostic trouble codes P0300 and P0304, along with a temperature warning light that activates when the vehicle is cold. A low fuel level indication also appears on the scan tool. The car runs smoothly under normal conditions, but after clearing the codes, both misfire codes and the temperature light return once the vehicle has sat for some time. This inconsistency raises concerns about the root cause. I'm looking for guidance on how to diagnose this issue—especially since the engine appears to run fine in real-time, yet diagnostic codes persist. Any suggestions on where to begin troubleshooting? Thanks, WayneR

The red temperature warning light is used for two purposes: it illuminates when engine temperatures reach a level that could cause damage, and also when coolant levels are low. Therefore, I recommend first checking your coolant level—always use only original VW coolant (ethyleneglycol-based), as non-VW coolants like ethylene glycol can damage composite components in the cooling system. Next, inspect for any leaks or signs of coolant loss. Regarding the misfire codes (P0300 and P03-than you're experiencing, it may not be running smoothly. Even if it feels smooth to you, engine performance data from fuel trims and ignition timing analysis can reveal underlying issues. Focus on cylinder 4 specifically—since P0304 points to a misfire in that cylinder—and investigate potential causes such as faulty spark plugs, worn ignition coils, or clogged fuel injectors. Diagnosing the root cause of the misfire will help resolve both the code and temperature light issues.
