P0705 Fault in 2003 VW Eurovan: Is Trans Range Sensor A Circuit Issue Fixable with Battery Disconnection?

Model: 2003 VW Eurovan Fault Code: P0705 Posted: 2016-09-15 11:15

After replacing the transmission in my 2003 VW Eurovan, I recently received a Check Engine Light (CEL) with fault code P0705 — indicating an issue with the Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit. The mechanic suggested disconnecting the battery, reconnecting it, and performing several shifts to allow the vehicle's system to relearn the parameters. I'm wondering if this approach is standard or reasonable for this specific model. Is the Trans Range Sensor A located inside the transmission or as an external switch? Additionally, the van feels different now — shifting seems smoother but less powerful — which makes me suspect a communication gap between the engine and transmission control modules. Could the fault code be cleared simply by reapplying power, or does it require actual diagnostic testing to confirm sensor functionality?

Disconnecting the battery is a common practice to clear stored fault codes and allow the vehicle's adaptive system to perform a fresh self-test — essentially giving the ECU a 'second opinion' on sensor readings. However, ideally, the technician should conduct a road test before returning the vehicle, as some issues may not manifest immediately and require several driving cycles to surface.

Thanks for confirming — that's exactly what the mechanic recommended. After clearing the code, I haven- t driven it for a few weeks, so my perception of shifting has faded. It now shifts smoothly but feels less responsive than before. This could indicate a shift learning issue or sensor misalignment post-repair.

Many modern vehicles, including the 2003 VW Eurovan, use adaptive learning systems that require time and driving cycles to recalibrate transmission behavior. The reset process likely erased these learned parameters during the transmission replacement. It's recommended to drive the vehicle under normal conditions and discuss any shifting concerns with the technician promptly.

Thanks — I'll follow up with the mechanic soon and perform a few test drives to assess if the behavior improves or if further diagnostics are needed.
