2003 Toyota Highlander P0016 code

I keep getting the check engine light (P0016 code) after I had both the Crank and Cam shaft sensors replaced and before that after having the timing belt and tensioner replaced (All Professionally done). The mechanic (Tires Plus) reccommended that I take the car to the Toyota Dealer to find out what is going on. This seems like passing the buck like he is washing his hands of me after me having spent upwards of $1600.00 between having the cam and crank sensors, timing chain and 2x O2 sensors replaced! What could keep turning this code to happen?

Lesson learned, tire shops normally not equipped to diagnose. Looks like they changed lots parts associated with the code. If after the first diagnoses/recommended work was done unsuccessfully, you should not have paid for their misdiagnoses. The Toyota dealer should be able to give you an accurate diagnoses/fix. They will use a scope to verify cam/crank signals are normal. Something that the other shop probably didn't do. Causes may include: Timing chain stretched, or timing belt skipped a tooth due to wear Misalignment of timing belt/chain Tone ring on crankshaft slipped/broken Tone ring on camshaft slipped/broken Bad crank sensor Bad cam sensor Damaged wiring to crank/cam sensor Timing belt/chain tensioner damaged Read more: p0016

Brand new timing chain, tensioner, cam pos. sensor, and crank pos. sensor. But the dealership is next....for one more diagnostic charge ($110.00) all I want to do is pass smog!!

Mechanic says the Cam Sprocket on bank 1 is loose.....hasn't said what it'll cost yet

If that is his diagnoses for fixing P0016 then hold him to it. Let us know.

All is well ....all lights out and passed smog! Loose Camshaft Sprocket....apparently worn after only 120,000 mi

Not what I'd expect from a Toyota, but this car is a money pit! Have already replaced all O2 sensors, Catalytic Convertor, fixed an exhaust leak, timing belt, cam and crankshaft sensors, and the cam sprocket.

That the car is a money pit to you i don't doubt however seems you got poor technical help rather than poorly manufactured parts.

A tire shop is not the same as a dealership service department. I suspect there is more to this story but I also suspect letting a tire shop do this mechanical work is costing you time and money. You did not mention how long you've had the car, what other codes you've had, etc. Maybe you recently bought this and the car was neglected, etc. Many possibilities.

I also didn't mention the four struts I've replaced and a noise in the rear suspension that Toyota said they would have to replace the rear axle to fix??? Yeah it's probably been abused because we bought it in Illinois and started having problems while driving it to Nevada.
