2003 S10 PO420 and PO440 Codes After Aftermarket Exhaust Installation
New user here with a troubleshooting question. I recently installed a new Magna Flow catalytic converter and a FlowMaster Series 40 muffler as part of an exhaust upgrade. The installation was done at a professional repair shop, not by me. Since the modification, my 2003 S10 has started showing the engine warning light. A diagnostic check revealed both PO420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold) and PO440 (Evaporative Emission System Malfunction) codes. Given that these codes appeared after the exhaust change, I suspect the aftermarket system is interfering with emissions monitoring. Is this a calibration issue? Can a non-dealer technician resolve it? What are the best steps to fix or eliminate these codes without damaging the vehicle's performance or emissions compliance?
The aftermarket catalytic converter is likely the root cause. If possible, reinstalling the original factory converter may resolve the issue. There is no official 'factory calibration' that can be applied by non-dealers to fix this. A performance programmer might help in some cases, but expect potential side effects such as increased emissions or engine misfires. For the PO440 code, a simple fuel cap replacement is often sufficient; if not, inspect the evaporative system solenoid for faults.
