2003 Pontiac Grand Am P0404 Code: EGR Circuit Open - Diagnosis and Fix Guide

Model: 2003 Pontiac Grand Am Fault Code: P0404 Posted: 2009-04-28 16:06

I noticed my SES light came on while driving home yesterday. I visited Advance Auto to have the code scanned, and it returned a P0404 diagnostic trouble code. The description indicates an 'EGR circuit, open performance position' issue. After clearing the code, it has not reappeared during subsequent drives. Recent maintenance history: - November 8: Transmission fluid and filter replaced - February 9: LIM, UIM, valve cover gaskets installed; spark plugs and fuel filter serviced - March 9: Air filter and PCV valve replaced - April 9: Spark plug wires, belt tensioner, and serpentine belt replaced The vehicle currently has 144,600 miles. All scheduled maintenance is up to date except for oxygen sensor replacement. It features a 3.4L V6 engine. I'm seeking advice on what to inspect or repair next. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Don't panic — the SES light may have been triggered by a temporary glitch. If it returns, an EGR valve failure is a likely cause. EGR valves typically cost around $80 and are relatively straightforward to replace. They're located on the top rear side of the manifold, near the brake booster. Some reports suggest that certain EGR systems can send incorrect signals to the PCM, which may trigger the P0404 code. In such cases, a dealer-performed PCM software update has been known to resolve the issue. Personally, I haven't experienced an EGR valve failure in my own vehicles yet.

Thanks for the insight! The SES light hasn’t come back on since then. The only time I’ve had EGR-related issues was with a 1977 Mustang — it went through two EGR valves over four years.

Was that the Mustang II with the 4-banger engine? My friend once owned a 1976 model with that setup — we clocked nearly 26 seconds from 0 to 60, which wasn’t even considered a Pony car!

My EGR issue came on in a V8 302 engine. It required two sets of brake pads — not because of driving habits, but due to the EGR system malfunctioning. By today’s teenage standards, I was a very conservative driver.

Unfortunately, my SES light came back on yesterday with the same P0404 code. It seems like I’ll need to replace the EGR valve as a next step.
