2003 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Check Engine Code P2181: Sensor Replacement & Diagnosis Tips

Model: 2003 Passat 1.8T Fault Code: P2181 Posted: 2011-05-18 13:30

I recently replaced the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) after receiving the P2181 code, which indicates a coolant temperature sensor circuit malfunction. Following that, I had my timing belt and related components replaced—something I needed to do anyway due to age. However, after these repairs, the check engine light came back on, and the same P2181 code was confirmed. My engine temperature readings are normal, so I’m confident it’s not a thermostat issue. I’m wondering if it's possible for the CTS sensor to fail during or shortly after installation—some sources suggest this can happen due to improper torque or electrical connection issues. If that’s true, should I replace the sensor again? Are there any other potential causes for P2181 on a 2003 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T with 114,000 miles? Any advice would be greatly appreciated—especially since dealerships are charging high fees to investigate this issue.
