I'm experiencing a persistent P0501 code on my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon V6 GT with automatic transmission. I've already replaced the differential-mounted speed sensor, the right front wheel speed sensor, and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Despite these replacements and battery reset, the Check Engine Light remains on and the P0501 code persists. My Actron scanner shows a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) reading of 0, yet the speedometer functions normally. There are no ABS warnings or ABS-related error codes. The car has stock tires on all four wheels, and there is no ABS light illuminated. The issue appears to be isolated to the VSS signal—while the speedometer works when the sensor is plugged in, it fails completely when unplugged during driving. I suspect a wiring fault between the wheel speed sensor and the PCM, but I'm not certain of the exact location or cause. Any insights into diagnosing this P0501 issue on a 2003 Tiburon would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I replaced the differential-mounted VSS with a new OEM part. It's a three-wire sensor (red, brown, black). I confirmed voltage is present at the sensor when powered. When I unplug it during driving, the speedometer stops working—only returns to function when reconnected. This suggests the sensor is essential for speedometer operation. I've also replaced the right front wheel speed sensor with no improvement. No ABS light is on, and my scanner shows only P0501 (Range Performance - A).

Did you use an original Hyundai OEM part for the VSS? Are all four tires the same size? If so, we should verify the sensor ground connection and output signal while driving. I'm thinking of a DIY test—checking continuity between the VSS at the wheel and the PCM. Also, confirm that the wiring harness from the VSS to the PCM isn't open, grounded, or shorted.

Thanks for the input! I had a technician inspect it—no voltage or ground was detected between the wheel speed sensor and the PCM. We believe there's a wire cut somewhere in the harness between them. Our plan is to temporarily jumper the connection between the sensor and PCM to see if that resolves the P0501 code and restores normal operation.
