2003 GMC Envoy P0440 Code After Rear End and Manifold Repair - Possible EVAP System Damage?

Model: 2003 GMC Envoy Fault Code: P0440 Posted: 2008-07-21 07:58

Hi everyone, I'm currently dealing with a persistent P0440 diagnostic trouble code on my 2003 GMC Envoy. This code is often associated with evaporative emissions system issues, and I'm concerned about what might have happened during recent repairs. The truck was purchased used with an extended warranty. Shortly after completing rear-end and manifold replacement work at a dealership, the P0440 code appeared — just one day later. I've reviewed various causes of this fault code, but my main concern is whether any evaporative (EVAP) system components could have been damaged or disconnected during these repairs. Specifically: - The mechanic had to drill out existing manifold studs to replace the exhaust manifold. - The rear-end work was also performed at the same time. Could any vent lines — such as those connecting the fuel tank to the EVAP canister — have been accidentally broken, dislodged, or damaged during these procedures? I'm seeking advice on how to verify this. Any insights into common EVAP system components and their locations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you asked the dealership to re-inspect the work they completed? Sometimes a simple visual or system check can resolve the issue without additional costs.

I've already tried that — they refused to perform a ramp inspection without charging me an extra fee. This is really frustrating and makes it hard to get a proper diagnosis.

It's worth checking under the vehicle for any disconnected or loose EVAP lines, especially those connected to the charcoal canister. Could you clarify which manifold you're referring to — exhaust or intake? Both are possible, but exhaust is more commonly involved in such repairs.

Exhaust manifold. Where exactly is the EVAP canister located? Is it inside the engine compartment or behind the fuel tank? I may need to buy a Haynes manual to locate it properly.

While not certain, I believe the EVAP canister in most 2003 GMC Envoy models is located mid-vehicle, under the floor pan. It's typically a large black square box. There should be a main vent line (about 1 inch diameter) leading to a solenoid valve. Additional lines connect it to the fuel tank and engine for purging operations. A visual inspection of these components can help identify potential damage.

Thanks so much! This information is very helpful. I'll check those areas carefully and update if I find anything or resolve the issue.
